A tight connection can ruin a trip and a long one can waste a day. Knowing how minimum connection times work, what to do when you miss a flight and how to choose a layover length saves both money and stress.

For domestic US connections, 60 to 90 minutes is workable. For international, aim for two to three hours at minimum, and longer if you must change terminals or clear immigration.

If you book on one ticket, the airline must rebook you after a missed connection. On separate tickets, you are on your own.
